Today's post comes from my second shooter, personal financial advisor, and most importantly, my husband, Griffin! He's here to talk about how you can be the best groomsmen, and if anybody is qualified to talk about it, it's this guy. He's been a groomsmen EIGHT TIMES! Let's see what he has to say about being a good groomsmen...
We’ve all been in that spot. Our friend calls us or corners us in a coffee shop and asks “Will you be a groomsmen in my wedding?” The obvious answer is yes. But the less obvious answer is, “What do I do now?” Throughout my time of being a groomsman and photographing bridal parties, I've picked up some tips on how to be the best groomsmen possible. So if you’re asking, “What do I do now?” you’ve come to the right place.
Show Up On Time
This one seems simple, and Kathryn even mentioned this in her post How To Be The Best Bridesmaid, but I’m saying this again because this is so important. Show up on time! Your goal on wedding day is to reduce stress, not create it. How do you accomplish this? Find the schedule for the day, limit your bourbon intake, and take the lead on ensuring the groomsmen are staying on time.
Fortunately for the groom, he will receive wedding gift after wedding gift. Unfortunately, all of those wedding gifts will either be for the kitchen or the bathroom. If you want to blow the groom away, pitch in $50 each and buy the groom something that isn’t a towel or a Magic Bullet®. Need ideas? I’ve seen golf clubs, a fancy watch, an expensive bottle of liquor. Get creative and leave him speechless.
You may be asked to give a speech at either the wedding or the rehearsal dinner. During my time of attending and shooting weddings, I’ve seen incredible speeches, and honestly, I’ve seen complete disasters. My advice? Prepare a single story which will show everyone in attendance that the groom is an incredible man. Finish by complimenting his bride and thanking the parents. Above all, keep it clean. Keep it under five minutes. And did I mention to keep it clean?
These are my key ways to being a stellar groomsmen. If you have any other ideas, please share them below. And if you’re a groom, you should definitely share this with your groomsmen (especially the second bullet point).
