Before I became a wedding photographer, I was in college and, like many college students, had strong opinions. One of those opinions was that engagement sessions were self-centered and a waste of time. I also hated on The Bachelor and thought I was never going to get married, two things I can now proudly say I enjoy. All that to say, if you’re coming from a place of skepticism, I can totally relate. But I’m here to tell you that engagement photos are absolutely not self-centered OR a waste of time, and I highly recommend having engagement photos done by the photographer you’re hiring for your wedding.
You’re probably going to have a rehearsal the day before your wedding, right? And you’ll have a few fittings for your wedding dress, especially the month leading up to your wedding. What about cake tasting? You did that before you decided to book who was going to make your cake. All these things are preparation for the big event. You practice the way the ceremony will go instead of just winging it on the day of. You try on your dress to make sure it fits perfectly. You taste the cakes so you can know you’re serving your guests the absolute best cake in celebration of your marriage. All those things are so incredibly important, and they guarantee that your wedding day will go exactly as you imagined.
Your engagement session is a practice round for your wedding photography.
If you take the time and invest in engagement photos with your wedding photographer, you’re doing a few things. First, you’re working with your photographer, in most cases, for the first time as a couple. You’ll get to see how your photographer poses you, and interacts with you.
Second, you guys will work out the kinks - you can tell your photographer if you have a favorite side, or if there’s something you want her to keep in mind while photographing (telling your photographer that you’re self conscious about something before your session is very helpful!)
Third, you’ll have some beautiful photos you can use for your save the dates and decorate your home with (our engagement photos are some of my favorite photos of me and Griffin to this day!) After an engagement session, you’ll be able to walk into your wedding day with confidence knowing that your photographer is going to capture your day the way you’ve envisioned.
It is never self centered to have professional photos taken, and your engagement is one of the sweetest times of your life. Documenting that time, those feelings, is always valuable. I would totally regret if we hadn’t had an engagement session before our wedding, and I’m so glad I was able to trust my photographer with the photos we will share with our family for generations to come.
